Low energy light bulbs can be startlingly more efficient than the conventional light bulb and in general can last up to fifteen times longer. The fitting of these bulbs is easy as they are manufactured to use the same connections as standard bulbs – usually either screw or bayonet cap. Not only will using these bulbs help to lower unwanted emissions, but it will also reduce the cost to you in your electricity bill.
The energy saving bulb is based on fluorescent lamp technology whose design has been compacted -giving rise to the abbreviation for these bulbs – CFL meaning ‘compact fluorescent lamp’.
The bulb works by applying a voltage difference (potential difference) between the cathode and the anode terminals (positive and negative) of the bulb, when the difference is large enough electrons try to jump across the gap between the terminals some make it but others do not. The ones that don’t make it hit an inert gas (inert means it does not react with anything under normal conditions) during this collision electrons within the inert gas are excited – have more energy – and so to return to a stable condition stable the electrons release energy in the form of a photon, thus lighting the bulb.
The one off cost of buying a low energy light bulb is higher than a normal bulb, but this cost is offset by the continued saving on electricity and the longer lifespan of the bulb.
There are two major kinds of energy saving bulbs – the CFL, as mentioned above, and the LED (light emitting diode) bulb. Both bulbs provide substantial energy saving but there are key differences between them.
Currently LEDs are considered the most effective from of low energy light bulb, but they are expensive to purchase. Whilst they may provide even greater savings and have a long lifespan, the initial cost combined with the fact that additional fittings may be required means that, for the time being, CFLs are chosen by many for the home and the workplace.
LEDs produce light thanks to a phenomenon called electroluminescence and a semiconductor with added impurities. Additional atoms allow for some free electrons at one end of the semiconductor and for holes in the other end into which electrons can go. When an electrical current is applied the charges gain enough energy to jump across the gap to combine with its oppositely charged counterpart. When they combine they release energy again in the form of light. The colour of this light is dependent upon the size of the gap between the two surfaces.
It is likely that further development in science and technology will see many changes to lighting over the coming decades. Low energy light bulbs have come a long way in a comparatively short space of time – in fact, lighting itself has, given that the first light bulbs were only really beginning to emerge in the 1800s. Today individuals have a lot of choice when choosing products, and it is always best to do some research or seek advice when choosing which kind of low energy light bulb will work best for you.
